Miami's Political Dynasties
Which politicians are we tracking? We have to start somewhere, so why not begin with the 6 largest political dynasties in Miami’s history: the families who have made politics and influence-peddling a family business and who are still wielding power. We’re tracking the 20-year reign of the Gimenez family, the 28-year reign of the Regalado family , the 39-year reign of the Suarez family, the 45-year reign of the Carollos, the 31-year reign of the Diaz de la Portilla family, and the Hardemon family, whose grip on power started in the 1990s. Together, these families have won 56 political races and reigned for decades.
And it’s not just the dynasties: we’ve also included Miami-area politicians who have recently been arrested and indicted on public corruption-related charges and those who are reportedly under investigation (see “other egregious offenders” below).
We are tracking them and issuing warning signs about each politician using publicly available data from their campaign finance reports, to their criminal records, to the orders issued by the Florida Election Commission and the Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust.

We used to have a public corruption investigative unit within the Miami-Dade Sherriff’s Office. It’s time to bring it back.
We cannot allow corrupt politicians to continue exploiting their positions for personal gain at the expense of our community. Restoring trust in our local government and safeguarding our taxpayer dollars is crucial.
Why Do We Need a Miami Corruption Tracker?
The level of public corruption across Miami-Dade in the last few years has been shocking. Just as shocking is the level of special interest influence being pushed by lobbyists, real estate developers, and the construction industry, who stand to profit from friendly government. It is imperative for organizations like ours to ensure that Miami-Dade County residents have easy access to information about their current officials and candidates for public office. By providing transparent access to this crucial data, we empower residents to make informed decisions and hold their leaders accountable. In a political landscape where information is power, we firmly believe that sunshine is the best disinfectant.
We believe Miami-Dade residents deserve more comprehensive information about their current and former elected officials. Although many news outlets and publications, such as the Miami Herald, Political Cortadito, Miami New Times, Al Crespo, The Florida Bulldog, and Billy Corben, have reported on and uncovered some of this information, we wanted to create a comprehensive website to compile it all. While this site is a constantly evolving work-in-progress, we hope residents find it useful.
Who is Behind This?
We are a Florida-based, 501(c)4 not-for-profit organization focused on pocketbook issues.
Public corruption harms taxpayers by diverting resources meant for public services and infrastructure, leading to higher costs and lower quality. It undermines trust in government, fosters unfair decision-making based on favoritism, and stifles economic growth. Ultimately, taxpayers pay more for less, bearing the burden of corrupt practices.

Miami Political Dynasties: The Families Shaping Decades of Local Governance
Miami politics has long been influenced by powerful families, resembling more of a monarchy than a democracy. The Carollos, Regalados, The Suárez family, Diaz de la Portillas, Hardemons, and Gimenezes dominate the political scene, facing numerous allegations of corruption and ethical misconduct. This concentrated power raises concerns about fairness and the true function of democracy in local governance.
